PENSION RATES.
Surely those are mischievous writers who affirm that a man with a wife and small family should have £5 or £0 weekly. Thousands of workmen's wives would be thankful for the half of it. Every married man should have a plot of ground and grow vegetables on it. There would then be need to spend money on fruit, but it is infinitely better to spend it on fruit than in some other ways. Let him shun all forms of gambling or questionable amusements; better to spend his evenings in the garden. I have known men on stations earning £1 per week and found keeping a wife and family, owning a cottage and plot of ground and contented. I have known other men earning 27/ weekly finding their own food for 7/ cooking and baching, and savingmoney. No thought of striking or look in.? for the dole. THRIFT.
