IDLE MINERS.

THE TROUBLE AT WAIHI. ANOTHER MEETING HELD. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) WAIHI, this- day. With a view to settling the dispute between the unions associated with the mining industry and the management of the Martha gold mine regarding the conditions of the 40-hour week as set out by the company, certain proposals from the Government were submitted to an adjourned mass meeting at the Academy Theatre this morning. Mr. J. Thorpe, president of the Ohinemuri Mines and Batteries Union, presided over a large attendance. Those present included the Hon. E. Dye; Mr. H. E. Mostyn, Assistant Secretary of Labour, Wellington; and Mr. Melvor, of the Labour Department, Hamilton. The meeting lasted for a little under two hours, and after considerable discussion it was decided that the council of the unions meet the Government representatives at Waihi with a view to arranging a conference with Mr. R. G. Milligan, local director and attorney of the company. No definite settlement of the dispute was therefore arrived at as a result of the mass meeting, and the men will remain out. The council of the unions consists of the representatives of all unions associated with the mining industry.
