IRRIGATION SCHEME

MEXICO'S DEVELOPMENT.

THE PRESIDENT'S PROGRAMME,

REYNOSA (Mexico). ■ Three irrigation projects —costing 80,000,000 pesos . (£4,480,000) and bringing under cultivation 1,500,000 acres of raw land in Northern Mexico—top the agricultural development programme of President Lazaro Cardenas. Most important to the border region will be the A'zucar Dam on the San Juan River > prominent tributary dumping into the Rio Grande just above Rio Grande City, Texas. -Engineers already are surveying the dam site 100 "miles south-west of Reynosa. Azucar Dam is expected to aid in Rio Grande flood control, since the San Juan River almost invariably goes, on a ramj'page when the border stream rises dangerously. This dam will provide irrigation water for more than! 150,000 acres in an area that-'hitherto (has been but little cultivated and, for the most part, devoted to cattle range. The first irrigation project to be finished, Mexican authorities say, will be El Palmito Dam, on the Nazas River, in Coahuila, where about 900,000 acres in the Torreon district will be irrigated. The dam will impound about 3^000,000,000 cubic metres of water. Third on the list of projects is Angostura Dam, on the Yaqui River, in Sonora, which will irrigate many thousands of Yagui Valley acres in that wild section.
