LIMIT £1059.

WAITAKERE ROADWAY.

BOROUGH'S ALLOCATION.

MOUNT EDEN DISCUSSION.

I "It seems to me that the City Council | is attempting to hold the 'big stick' I over the boroughs with the talk of a j Greater Auckland scheme," said Mr. R. ! Mills at the meeting of the Mount Eden I Borough Council last night when advice | was received from the Auckland City | Council that Mount Eden's allocation to , the Waitakere Ridgeway Road proposal had been increased to £1059. "I think I we should be very careful what we do ! about this or we might let ourselves in : for a lot of money." I The Mayor, Mr T. McNab, said thai | the present allocation of £1059 was final. Mr. Mills: I am not so sure about that. I understand some local bodies are not going to contribute. Mr. McNab: They will have to pay. Mr, Mills: I can't see for the life of me why Mount Eden should contribute more than, say, Hunilton or Helensville. They can come to Auckland and drive over it just the same as Mount Eden people. It should be a national job. There are a lot of young men frequenting gambling schools who could be better employed working on the proposed road. lam personally opposed to the allocation. Other boroughs will use it as much as we will. Mr. Beale: It will only be a nine days' wonder in any case. Mr. McNab: The other local bodies will have to pay. Ihe Government is finding £80,000. Mr. Mills: Well, why doesn't the Government pay the lot? Mr. A. C. Johns said he did not agree with Mr. Mills. If Mr. Mills wished to go to. Cambridge he would not expect Hamilton to object to him going across the bridge at Hamilton. Mr. McNab: This allocation of £1059 is final. .. Mr. Johns: The amount should be definitely fixed. I will move that Mount Eden be prepared to pay no more than £1059.

The motion was seconded and carried, Mr. Mills voting against it.
