SHELTER SOUGHT.
RUAPEHU SNOW SPORTS. PAN-PACIFIC PROSPECTS. (From Our Own Correspondent.) NATIONAL PARK, this day. A strong and bitter wind made it impossible yesterday to continue the inter-Dominion ski contests on Ruapehu, although the weather showed considerable improvement. On a sheltered slope, however, the Ruapehu Ski Club held its men's and women's slalom championship events. It was possible yesterday to ski right from the Salt Hut to the Chateau, and visitors were even ski-ing on the golf links in front of the building. There was a prospect of a period of fine weather and a consequent opportunity for some splendid sj»ort.
Since the Australian team will not leave until Thursday, there is still time to complete, the inter-Dominion events. Further progress has been made in regard to the scheme of T. W. Mitchell, the Australian captain, to hold a PanPacific meeting in New Zealand in 1938. Following a discussion with the general manager of the Tourist Department, Mr. L. J. Schmitt, who visited the Chateau yesterday, Mr. Mitchell said that Mr. Schmitt had, considered that a PanPacific meeting would be an excellent way of encouraging a worth-while sport, and had offered to find the accommodation expenses of an American team visiting the Dominion to compete at such a meeting.
"We now have something definite to offer the American's," said Mr. Mitchell. "Tlio Australians and the New Zealand controlling bodies can take the matter up with them with this indication of support." Details of the Ruapehu Club's events are as follow:— Men's Slalom.—B. McMillan (Stratford), 1.6 1-5 for two descents, 1; B. Murphy (Wellington), 1.8, 2; • J. D. Murphy (Kapongu), 1.25, 3. The next best were: H. Tilbury (Wellington), 1.44 4-5; H. Snowden (Inaha), 1.50,1-5. Wjfcien's SJalom.—Miss P. Murphy (Kaponga), 1.32 2-5 for two descents, 1; Mrs. T. W. Mitchell (Victoria), 1.59 4-5, 2; Miss -J. Murphy (Kaponga), '2.2 2-5, 3.
