EISTEDDFOD ENDS.
Australian and New Zealand Standards Compared. TILT AT WOMEN SINGERS. (Received 10.30 a.m.) SYDNEY, this day. The special prize of £25, given by the Arts Club for the most promising voice among competitors at the City of Sydnev Eisteddfod, was won by Mr. Walter Carter, of Newcastle. The competitors included the New Zealanders, Misses Bertha Rawlinson, Julie Warry and Sybil Phillips. The adjudicator, Mr. H. Temple White (New Zealand) said the men's voices showed more promise than the women's. Mr. White, who was the chief choral and vocal adjudicator at the Eisteddfod, broadcasting his impressions of the competitions, said that if some of the women entrants had given as much thought to their musical training and knowledge as they did to their appearance the adjudicator and audiences would have been very much more satisfied. Comparing the standard between New Zealand and Australia, Mr. White said he thought New Zealand's was the better. Competitors in such events as grand opera and aria could rank with the best he had heard in Sydney. Mixed choirs, male and female choirs, and church choirs were far better than anything he had heard in the competition field in New Zealand. The Sydney Eisteddfod was concluded on Saturday evening. Final results were as follow: — Melba Trophy, for vocal solo: The men's section was won by Mr. Christopher Lodge (Forbes, New South Wales) and the women's section by Miss Bertha Rawlinson (Dunedin). Oratorio solo for ladies: Miss Joyce Atkins (Canterbury), 01 points, 1; Miss Bertha Rawlinson (Dunedin), 90, 2. The choral contest for female choirs was won by the Hurlstone Park Choral Society. The Newcastle Choral Society was second.
