HOME TEAM WIX BY 4 TO 3. n Auckland succcss.ully defended the Xew Zealand Chahenge i Shield against Canterbury. at Papatoetoe on Saturday aiternoon by a score of 4 to 3. There was little difference between the two teams. Whereas' Canterbury gave flashes of brilliant stick work and movements, they lacked finish in the danger zone. Auckland showed their capabilities :n snapping up opportunities which arose through mistakes by the visiting backs. Played at a hard pace throughout, the ' spectators were treated to a thrilling, exhibition of the stick game. Canterbury also failed in their second mission, a four-goal draw not being sufficient to lift the Zanol Cup from the Auckland junior representatives. The teams were: — Auckland (blue and white): M. Canterbury won the toss and defended the eastern goal. From the bully play gravitated down the left flank, Wellborne and Lawry combining well, and from a penalty corner a scramble in the goalmouth resulted and Lawry pushed the ball into the net to register the first score within three minutes of the start. Auckland • 1 Canterbury 0 Auckland maintained the pressure, Montieth getting away on his own, but the goalie came well out and cleared with a speculator. Canterbury then advanced from the left, but the centre was intercepted by Clark, who sent play back to Canterbury's quarter. Duffield, with some clever stick work, temporarily raised the siege, but Auckland were not to be denied and continued to press. Roughton took the ball in on his own, bu'tt' Rhind kicked clear. Close circle play followed, but offside eased Canterbury. Bowden next made a fine run down the right beating the defence, centred, but Duffield missed a line chance and Auckland cleared. Canterbury advanced down the left flank, T. McCormack reaching Clark, who cleared with a hefty hit. Then Duffield juggled bis way through, only to spoil his effort through hanging on too long. Canterbury returned with a central attack, Auckland conceding a corner, which Canterbury failed to finalise. A series of corners followed and from the last one McCormack sent in a high shot to the top of the net. Auckland 1 Canterbury 1.... 1 A clever forward movement saw Canterbury gain ground and Auckland wete forced to defend stubbornly. After a temporary onslaught by Auckland, Canterbury forced them back with another central attack, the Auckland goal being in grave danger. From a long free hit a play changed ends, and Roughton, in a > nice position to shoot, slipped, but forced a corner, from which he made no mistake. Auckland 2 Canterbury * After a period of midfield play Canterbury gained the circle, the ball coming out to Bowden, who shot hard and high into the net. From the bully Auckland rallied with d strong attack, gaining the Circle, but 'the shot missed the upright. Half-time was then called. Auckland ' 2 Canterbury 2

Auckland Regain Lead. Auckland were .first away, working down the right, but the -defence.'proved too strong. Duflield rated away smd relieved temporarily the pressure, but ' Roughton returned play to the red circle, "where he over-ran, but Wellborne carried on, hitting too hard, a twenfV-five resulting. Auckland returned, Wellborne -and Lawry being prominent in some nice circle work, Rhind clearing with another sweeping shot.

An Exciting Finish. Canterbury gradually worked downfield, but an infringement in .the" circle held them up. Play quickly changed ends, Roughton sending out a long pass to Wellborne, who returned the ball infield, and from a corner the reds were defending des- ' ,perately in the goal-mouth, . Thompson eventually clearing. - Auckland continued to press until Duffield and Tr McCormack relieved the pressure with two £imely runs. From a twenty-five bully Canterbury sent the ball down the centre, and Wright passed to T. McCormack, who beat the defence with a stinging ground shot. Auckland 3 Canterbury 3 ' From mid-field Robertson sent straight down the centre to Roughton, who flicked a nice pass to Fenton, who raced to the circle and scored with a fine shot from a difficult angle. . Auckland 4 Canterbury 3 Auckland still pressed, Wellborne gaining the circle to have a shot which glanced off the post. . Back to Auckland's circle, Canterbury gained a corner, but Watson, breaking through, passed to Wellborne, who removed the danger.- Time was called shortly after. Back came the Auckland vanguard, and Canterbury ■were forced to concede a penalty corner. Auckland were next seen in a neat passing run up the left. The whole of the defence was drawn, and a close attack ended in Canterbury conceding a long corner, from Which Herriott scored. With Auckland on the attack half-time was called.
