BILLIARDS.
AUCKLAND TITLE. FIRST SESSION OF FINAL. Keen interest attached to the commencement of the final of the Auckland amateur provincial billiards championship on Saturday night, between the present New Zealand champion, L. F. Holdsworth, and a newcomer in R. Carrick, who,, learned the game in Australia. The - contest attracted a considerable gallery to the show-rooms of Messrs. Billiards, Limited. From a cautious opening by both players Carrick eventually picked openings for three runs of 21, 22 and 42, to get a useful lead, which stood to him when Holdsworth later showed his best form. At one stage Carrick led 384 to 184, hut Holdsworth then showed improved touch and at the end of the session had reduced his leeway considerably. The session scores were:—R. Carrick, in play, 501 (breaks of 31, 84, 22, 21, 22, 42, 25, 50, 32 unfinished); L. F. W. Holdsworth, 401 (breaks of 60, 29, 44, 81, 20, 27). The final session will be played to-night.
