EARLIER PAY-DAYS.

TUESDAY RECOMMENDED

NEW PLYMOUTH MOVEMENT. (By Telegraph.—Pre33 Association.) NEW PLYMOUTH, this day. A suggestion that is meeting with strong approval in New Plymouth is that employers should pay out wages at the beginning of each week instead of at the end as at present. The idea originated as the result of the shorter working hours that will c<sme into effect on Tuesday, and it is planned to spread the public's spending money over the whole week.

It is considered that, if all businesses made their pay-day either Monday or Tuesday the spending power of the publie would be spread over the full week, instead of being concentrated on Friday night and Saturday morning. Furthermore, the possibility of an eventual full day holiday on Saturday had to be faced. If this occurred and wages continued to be paid on Friday a great deal of money that would normally go back to business houses would be spent in other directions.

The meeting decided to recommend to the New Plymouth Retailers' Association that it endeavour to have all wages paid not later than Tuesday in each week.

Although the plan apparently originated in New Plymouth, it has also been given attention in other centres. Business men at Hawera have expressed themselves in favour of the scheme, while at Hamilton some of the larger firms have already decided on, making pay-days earlier in the week.
