STABLE AND TRACK NOTES.

J OPPOSITION WAS MODERATE. High Quality has taken a long time to win a race, but he achieved the feat in the Ladies' Bracelet at the Pakuranga meeting on Wednesday. He was a long way back half a mile from home, but gradually improved -his position;. though he ;had, to be ridden ,right~'out 'to win.. The ; field "opposed to him was very moderate, and he will have to improve to win in the hack fields he will have to meet in the future. DOING GOOD WORK. Glenthawn is stated to be working particularly well at Hawera and is not without prospects in the Whenuakura Hack Handicap at New Plymouth. He showed promising form at the Waikato winter meeting by finishing second to Le Chasseur in a six-furlong maiden event, and he should. be an improved horse next week. • Glenthajvn ..is a four-year-old gelding by Colossus from Munitioness and is trained by J. Fryer. LED ALL THE WAY. Tradesman registered his first success over a middle distance' when he led throughout in the Jellicoe Handicap on Wednesday at Ellerslie. The fact that the pace was slow over the early stages of the contest assisted the son of Kaceful <*> good deal, arid lie ran out the ten furlongs well. It is doubtful if Tradesman has ever been in better condition than at present, while the going was made to order for him, as he is one of the best gallopers in heavy going racing in the Auckland province.

FUTURE LOOKS BRIGHT. A promising novice in Strathire was responsible for a pleasing performance in the Sylvia Park Handicap on Wednesday. He began well, and was right up with Johnny Walls (the winner) at the home turn, eventually finishing a close third. As Strathire has only had a limited experience and is a good type of hack, his future prospects look bright. He is a four-year-old gelding by Delightment from Lady Glen, and is trained at Avondale by T. H. Bezar.

GOT SOLID SUPPORT. Good reports were to hand concerning Con Fuoco's condition prior to the Pakuranga meeting and he was accorded solid support in the Jellicoe Handicap at Ellers3ie on Wednesday. However, the best he could do was to finish third to Tradesman and Lord Val. He was in a winning position when the field raced across the top, therefore no excuses could be made for him. The outing at Ellerslie should sharpen up Con Ftioco considerably, and he may win a race before the spring meetings are over. SHOWED PLENTY OF SPEED. Huntsman's Chorus, who was having his first race since joining E. S. Groat's stable at Ellerslie, when he competed in the Auckland, Handicap at the Pakuranga Hunt meeting on Wednesday, showed a lot of ,speed. ■ He-began well and was right up with the leaders for six furlongs, when he commenced to" weaken and dropped back. The Hunting Song gelding had been showing a lot of'speed in his work, and as he is;,.,likely to derive a good deal of benefit £rpm..the race he should be Worth keeping'inftmind for a maiden event in the spring. \. ■ T form Was,consistent. ■ Electric Flash; raced' consistently at the Pakurang'a meeting, , finishing second in both races' she, coiitested. She jumped exceptionally well on each occasion and had every ,chance to win. " However, Indiscretion beat her easily* in the Greenmount Steeples and En Tour had no difficulty in heading her off in-the, Hunt Cup. Electric Flash only commenced racing three months ago and her form has been .encouraging, though she will need to improve in staying ability. As this 'mare is over eight years she is at an age when improvement can hardly be expected.

6n easy list. No definite plans have been made for Jolly Beggar. The dual Grand National Hurdles winner is in his old box at Riccarton, having an easy time, and it is probable that lie will be given a good rest, as a preliminiary to- F. Christmas starting him on a preparation with the idea of contesting the big event again next August. Stamina "is his great asset, and there will be no more races in Niew Zealand to show him at his best until next winter. A PROMISING YOUNGSTER. The Washdyke trainer E. J. Ellis is now devoting a good deal of attention to the two-year-old colt Patuna, by Cockpit from Pakitere, a half-sister by Arausio to Toxeuma, a good horse with a Winter Cup among his successes (says a southern writer). Patuna is a promising youngster, and he may be only one of his age to bring some distinction to Cockpit this season. RICKED SHOULDER. Fair Weather was unlucky in his racing at the Grand National meeting. He ran into some trouble in the August Handicap and a rick in a shoulder muscle has made a short rest necessary. The three-year-ojd Epic, in the same ownership, is working along steadily and he is booked for a trip to the Dunedin spring meeting, probably with a race at Ashburton as a preliminary. He has given no indications of stamina, but he looks a good prospect for an early sprint.

TO CONTEST WANGANUI GUINEAS,

Wild Chase has had his Wanganui Guineas engagement continued, and, all going well, he will be a runner (says the "Press"). Present intentions are to send Impersonator and Recollection to Wanganui with Wild Chase. Impersonator, who will race as a gelding in the future, recorded an impressive victory at Riccarton last Easter, and he may be expected to show useful form this season. He has not been in serious commission very long, but he has come to hand rapidly.

EARLY FOALS. Two early foals have arrived at Sir Charles Clifford's Stonyliurst Stud, both of them by Magnus. Swoopalong, by March Along—Brown Owl, has a colt, and Winsome Hind, by The Ace—Wild Hind, has a filly. Wild Hind (dam of Wild Chase), by Autumnus—Kirriemuir, and Scrimmage (dam of Fracas), by Antogonist —Mad Whirl, two of the Stonyliurst mares not in foal, are to be sent to the Waikato, to be mated with Foxbridge, by Foxlaw, one of the best stayers sired by Son-in-Lavv. *

FAILED TO COMPLETE COURSE. Irish Comet created a very favourable impression when he ran second in the Winter Steeplechase to Forest Glow, and on that performance alone he was entitled to the support given him in the Pakuranga Hunt Cup on Wednesday. He raced to the front with a round to go and was well clear along the back, but when the top of the hill was reached En Tour was very handy to him. Irish Comet, however, was then feeling the strain and toppled over at the last fence, where En Tour was just in front cf him. Even if he had stood up En T.our would have beaten him, for he was going much the better at the time of the mishap. PERFORMANCES WERE GOOD. En Tour put up two good performances at Ellerslie on Wednesday when he ran second in the Harris Memorial Hurdles arid later in the day won the Hunt Gup easily. He was always handy, and after crossing the double at the top of the hill the last time Irish Comet was the only one in front of him. However, En Tour had his measure at the last fence, where Irish Comet came to grief, and En Tour went oft to score very easily. En Tour was one of the fittest horses racing at the meeting, and his condition was a big factor in his success. At the Waikato Hunt meeting last October En Tour put up a similar performance, running second in the hurdles and winning the Hunt Cup.
