MANUKAU SEAT.
REQUIREMENTS OF THE ACT.
NATIONALIST MEETING.
Conditions under the Electoral Act provide that when the seat of any member of Parliament becomes vacant during a session, the Speaker shall forthwith, upon being ordered to do so by the House, issue his warrant to the Clerk of Writs directing him to issue a writ to supply the vacancy.
On receipt of this warrant the Clerk of Writs is required to issue a writ to the returning officer of the district concerned. The day for the polling to take place if a poll is required, and the day for nomination of candidates must be named in the writ, the day appointed as the latest day for nomination of candidates to be not less than 10 nor more than 17 days before the day named for polling. The writ is returnable to the Clerk of Writs in 40 days.
Mr. A. G. Osborne lias been selected as the official candidate of the Labour party for the Manukau by-election, but so far the Nationalist party has not reiiched a decision.
The Nationalist district executive has summoned a meeting of the electoral committee of Manukau for next Tuesday. The meeting will be held in the electorate, and arrangements will be made for the selection of a candidate, and steps will also be taken to organise the by-election campaign.
