MOTORIST'S OFFENCE.

INTOXICATION CHARGE. PENALTY OF £40 IMPOSED. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) HAWERA, Friday. A • charge of being intoxicated in charge of a motor car was preferred against a Hawera stock agent, William Marshall, in the Police Court at Hawera to-dav. It was stated that accused was seen by a constable when leaving a hotel. He stumbled in the doorway, but mado his way to the car. He was persuaded to go to the police station, where a doctor called by him certified that lie'was unfit to drive.

A fine of £40 was imposed, but accused's license was not cancelled, the magistrate remarking that such action would affect Marshall's livelihood. In the circumstances tlio case would best be met by a substantial monetary penalty.
