MR. HANNAN'S WILL.

SWORN AT £60,000,

OVER £30,000 TO CHARITY.

The fulfilment of a life-long ambition is given effect to in the will of the late Mr. John Henry Hannan, a wellknown Auckland resident, whose death occurred 011 August 9. The late Mr. Han nan owned over CO house properties in the city, and fit was the mutual desire of himself and his wife that his fortune should be bequeathed to the welfare of the children of Auckland. Mrs. Hannan predeceased her husband two years ago, and in Mr. Hannan's will, which has been sworn for. probate purposes as not exceeding £60,000, "there are specific bequests to charitable institutions totalling £1900, and there is provision for the division among four orphanages, and : the Community Sunshine Association,. o£ the residuary estate, which- is estimated to realise at least £30.000.

The trustees of tlie estate, Mr. A. Milliken, solicitor, and Mr. F. G. Carr, auctioneer, are. empowered to convert into money, the whole of . the real'and • pergonal est'atq., After providing for personal legacies*' and 14 bequests to institutions or churches, ranging from £300 to £100, the testator, decrees that the whole of the residuary Estate shall he divided equally among the following:—The Leslie Presbyterian Orphanage, Meadowbank, the Metl\odist Trust Board, Auckland, for the general purposes of the Methodist children's homes in the city, the Ivianurewa Children's Home, the Orphans' Home, Papatoetoe, administered by the Church of England, and tlie Community, Sunshine Association, Auckland. . Well-known Business Man, Having arrived in Auckland in 1879, Mr. Hannan was one of .the city's wellknown business ineri .in the early days. He was borri in the Vale of Avoca, County. Wicklow, Ireland, in 1858, and his father was a farmer and freeholder in County Carlow. Mr. Hannan served his apprenticeship to the drapery business. For some time after his arrival in Auckland'he was;, employed by Messrs. Som'erfield and Leek, wholesale and retail drapers, and left that firm to start business' for himself in Victoria Street. In 1880 he f was appointed to the Auckland City Schools'' "Committee, and in 1892 was appointed a justice of the peace and visiting justice to Auckland prison, His; w£ts, i the..first appointment of its kind made by the Cabinet in Mr. John Ballance's Ministry. He •was -elected to the Auckland City Council in 1899. Mr. Hannan was a past vice-president of the Band of Hope Union, and at one time was a member of the Devonport Presbyterian Church.
