TEACHER'S BOND.
REVISION NEEDED. ATTRACTING STUDENTS. METHOD OF SEI/ECTION. A copy of a remit from the Blockhouse Bay school committee, expressing the view that the present method of selecting students for admission to the Training College was unsatisfactory, and that instead of the selection being done solely by the senior inspector it should be done by a committee, was before the Auckland Education Board this morning. The remit also mentioned the present requirement which calls upon the selected student to provide a bond.
The chairman, Mr. T. U. Wells, said that the matters had been previously before the board and had been forwarded on to the Education Department. The Minister of Education, the Hon. P. Eraser, at a conference, had thrown out a hint that one of the committee should be a woman.
Mr. W. J. Campbell said the bond required bound only one side. The Department required a bond that the student after he had finished his training would put in a certain period as a teacher, but it did not bind the Department to find the teacher employment. The bond should bind both sides.
A similar view was taken by other speakers and it was decided to reply to the school committee informing the committee of what the board had done and also expressing its opinion on the question of the bond.
