"WIPE THEM OUT."

COUNTY RIDINGS. MINISTER'S CRITICISM. LOCAL BODY REVISION. (By Telegraph.—Prebs Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, this day. "These confounded ridings are nothing but a nuisance, and if I had my way I would wipe them out," said the Minister of Public Works, the Hon. R. Semple, in replying to a deputation yesterday, when it was pointed out to him that some ridings of a county supported a scheme under discussion, while the other ridings would not help financially because they thought that no direct benefits would extend to them.

"They are a tiling of the past, of the stone age," said the Minister. "They pay different rates and have practically 110 co-ordination."

This condemnation" of the ridings system was made to three of four deputations heard by the Minister yesterday afternoon. He also referred to the large number of county councils in New Zealand, remarking that there were far too many. The Government, he said, was going to encourage amalgamation where it was desirable, though the legislation would be in no sense arbitrary. The machinery would be provided, and results would come in due course.
