HOPES FADING

SKIERS LOST IN VICTORIA. (Received 11 a.m.) MELBOURNE, this day. Hopes for the safety of the two skiers lost on the Victorian Alps, Messrs. Cole and Hull, are fading. Nevertheless, nearly 100 searchers are combing hazardous snow country. Mr. Howard Mitchell, who left his companions, one of whom was unable to proceed further, is still in a serious conditions. His feet are badly frost-bitten and it may be necessary to amputate some of his toes.

Mr. T. E. Hull, who is treasurer of the Ski Club of Victoria, :s a man in his early twenties. Both lie and Mr. Cole, who is a member of the trips and huts committee of the same club, a man who might be ten years older, have several friends in Auckland. Mr. Cole spent a fortnight's holiday ski-ing in the Dominion a few years ago. An inspector of the Commonwealth Bank in Victoria, lie has for a long time been fascinated with the possibilites of Mount Bogong as a ski-ing resort. In fact, to many of his friends he is known as "Bogong" Cole. Earlier this year he completed the first ski trip acrpss the Dargo High Plains. Mr. Hull broke a leg while racing in the Victorian State championships last year, and local friends consider it possible that his leg gave out, and that Mr. Cole is staying beside his injured comrade.
