United Press Association.—Copyright. (Received 0.30 a.m.) LONDON, August 18. England defeated India in the final cricket Test to-day, at The Oval, by nine tVickets. With three wickets down for 15G runs in their second visit to the crease,, the Indians required 93 runs to save an innings defeat. The not but men were IJussain (30) and Jilani (12). A mere handful of spectators saw India continue the second innings. Hussain was painfully slow. C. K. Nayudu tried desperate measures. Once he ran out to drive Allen befow a short-pitched ball had left the English captain's hand. The ball struck Nayudu on the chest and laid him out for some minutes, but upon resuming Nayudu attacked and brilliantly saved an innings defeat. He pulled Sims for a six before Allen spread-eagled his wicket. England quickly wiped off the deficit, Barnett giving a very attractive display. Scores: — ENGLAND. Many centuries characterised the series of county cricket matches which began on Saturday, no less than three being scored by Worcestershire batsmen when Kent was defeated by an innings, at Dover. Although down against Derbyshire on the first innings a£ Worksop, the Notts opening batsmen, W. W. Keeton and C. B. Harris, were unbeaten with a hundred apiece in their second knock. A. Sandham and T. H. Barling both made over 170 for Surrey against Glamorgan, at Cardiff; while two threefigure scores appeared in the Essex innings against Hampshire, at Southend, M. S. Nicliolls getting a doublecentury. James Langridge secured a fine double for Sussex against Gloucestershire, at Cheltenham. E. Paynter,' the Lancashire lefthander, with another fine innings, further strengtliened his claim to the vacancy in the M.C.C. team for Australia, caused by the inability of E. R. T. Holmes to make the trip. E. Hendren, with 150 for Middlesex against Warwickshire, at Birmingham, became the first player to reach 2000 runs this season, beating L. B. Fislilock (Surrey), who went in late for England against India on Saturday and was not out when the innings was declared closed. Yorkshire won •by an innings and 155 runs. Lancashire: First innings, 345 (Paynter 119); second, two for 52. Northamptonshire: First innings, 154 (Parkinson five for 45); follow-on, 240 (Pollard 1 five for 52). Lancashire won by eight wickets.

Derbyshire: First innings, 218; second, eight for 270, declared (D. Smith 83). Notts: First innings, 102 (Copson four for 47); second, none for 215 (Keeton 100 not out, Harris 107 not out). Derbyshire won on the first innings. Middlesex: First innings, 278 (Hendren 150); second, seven for 270, declared (Hulme 103 not out). Warwickshire: First innings, 183 (Santall 81)•; second, four for 205 (Wyatt 100 not out). Middlesex won on the ( first innings.

Kent: First innings, 230; second, 199 (Howorth five for 48). Worcestershire: First innings, nine for 482, declared (Howorth 114, Bull 103, Gibbons 113 not out). Worcestershire won by an innings and 53 runs. Essex: First innings, 503 (Wilcox 133, Nichols 205). Hampshire: First innings, 343 (Mead 104; Eastman five for 51); follow-on, three for 257. Essex won on the first innings. Sussex: First innings, 206 (James Langridge 88 not out); second, 104 (Goddard seven for 00). Gloucestershire: First innings, 257 (Nye five for 63); second, seven for 174 (James Langridge five for 49). Gloucestershire won by three wickets.
