WAS ON CALLIOPE.
| DEATH OF NAVIGATOR. LONDON/August 18. i The death is announced of Captain ' Harrv Pearson, who * was navigating officer on the Calliope in the hurricane at Apia in 1889. When a hurricane struck Apia on March 16, 1889, it averted a tension which might easily have led to war. Three German warships and three American vessels which were lying in the harbour were smashed to pieces on the reef ana the beach, but the British warship Calliopeburning Westport coal from New Zealand—alone escaped disaster. Her master, Captain Kane, headed his vessel out to sea and passed between the reef and the American ship Trenton with only a few feet of raging sea to spare on each side. She had to etay outside for two days and then returned to a scene of desolation, sailing the next day for Sydney. Her hull was damaged and her foreyard sprung, while three of her boate were swept overboard. One man had been killed in the storm. Of the six other warships' complements 150 were lost. Many merchant ships r-re also destroyed.
