Victoria. Park No. 2, 10.30 a.m., Mr. Mead. SECOND DIVISION DOINGS. f DRAWN BATTLE AT ST.; HELIER'S. 4n easy victory to Abels over, a weakened 'home side at Onehunga and an exciting draw .between Navy and Eastern Suburbs at St. Heliers .Bay -sent Abels still further into the lead lor the final ro-und of the second division senior comS petition, but with new recruits due short!} Philomel has a chance of ousting bubmbs from the second rung of the ladder and perhaps pipping the Tamaki team lor promotion to the first division next season. YAI C A were saved a wasted journey to' New Lynn by the home officials intimating that they were unable to raise a team and. their fourths also defaulted to Shore. As New Lynn have now defaulted on three successive occasions the" may be regarded as definitely out ot the competition after a gallant effort to keep the flag of the code flying at the northern suburb. .. . . The idea of creating a second division competition at the start of the season was quite a good theory, and followed the sound lines established in England and Scotland, where second division clubs I often draw bigger gates, pay higher transfer fees and win as many cup ties as the first division, internationals often being drawn from these clubs. EXCITING- FINISH AT ST. HELIER'S. On both occasions this season the visit of the naval side to St. Helier's Bay has produced a lively arid thrilling display and on Saturday a hard-fought battle ended in a division of points, and honours easy at three all. The veteran Luke was on the sideline after a touch of the prevailing •'flu and had he been in the naval van his at übiquitous presence might have turned the Hi scales in the Phillies' favour, as the lofty, one is'generally good for a goal! As it was, Philomel jumped into the lead right from the kick-off, when Badlan slipped out to Colley and the left wing flier tore through to 'beat Smith with an express ground 6hot, and it 'was some time, after last exchanges and lively raids, that a neat combined run by Suburbs saw Marlow swing right across to Gumming, who lobbed into . the centre for Welch to equalise smartly. In the eecond spell Philomel got into the lead again when Colley crossed for Brown to net neatly, tut Suburbs promptly squared the .score with Marlow breaking through again and sending to the goalmouth, where:; a clean hit of headwork by Welch deflected, the ■ball past Lavis. It was a keen struggle then for the leading goal, Philomel getting ahead for the third time when the ColleyBrown combination netted again, but Oumanings got down on the right and lobbed across for Marlow to tear in at top and drive a curly cross-shot high to the far corner of the.net to even the score just ibefore time. For Suburbs, Matthews and Caldwell were very solid in defence and the latter, as pivot, fed the front line judiciously, where Marlow and Welch were conspicuous by their thrust. Kimber and Owens were a solid pair in the Navy's last line of defence and Scott gave a good display at on the leftflank was as speedy as ever and centred accurately, while Brown was little inferior on the opposite wing' and; is a promising young recruit to the Service side. Green at centre played His'lisnnl solid game, but for once was not a goal-getter. A SCRATCH GAME. At Onehunga .the,, home side intended to scratch in - - their engagement " 'with Abels, only a skeleton of senior playefs. ibeing available; .. .; Toi-quisthn'd Lanjpnt were absent playiiig^for .thciiFlyger Trophy in Wellington; Bloekley. aiid .LipdsayJ were on a referee's holiday,s-ancf Sgger' was on the injured list, but />lbels|' journey out and had ' ho' trouble in over.whelming a mixed team of seniors and: youths by 7 goals to nil:Onehunga >.'Bas now only one match to play and liiis been disappointed in not doing better after starting out with' bright prospects.
