AUSTRALIAN MEMORIALS.
Some very varying suggestions for memorials to be erected in connection with the forthcoming 150 th anniversary celebrations were put forward at a recent meeting in Sydney of the Women's Advisory Committee, with Mrs. Bernard Muscio in the chair. There was universal agreement as to the necessity for publication of a memorial volume dealing with the work and personalities of pioneer women, to be written and edited by*women; but the question of a permanent memorial of a public nature remains' still to be settled. One suggestion—that of Lady Gordon—was for a repertory theatre; the Pioneer Society suggested making a sunken garden near the Phillip statue; a suitable piece of statuary was the suggestion of Mrs..Florence Taylor; the Presbyterian Women's Federation wanted a ward or an X-ray plant at the Rachel Forster Hospital, which is run entirely by women for women; children's playgrounds were advocated by the Women's Guild of Empire; and' a women's and girls' sports ground 'by Lady Walder. A practical suggestion was for a college of domestic and cultural arts to be run in conjunction with the Hawkesbury Agricultural College. The reason given for her choice by Mrs. Margaret" Preston, the artist, was original. "I suggest the placing of seats in the city centres," said Mis. Preston; "the pioneer women were always tired, and wanted somewhere to sit down and rest."
