CATTLE ON ROADS
OTAHXIHtr FARMER CHARGED,
In the Police Court at Otaliuliu yesterday, before Mr.' Hunt, S.M., Frank Forward (Mr. Matthews) was charged with allowing cattle to graze on the roads. ,
Inspector Jones, of the Mamikau County Council, who prosecuted, stated that defendant, who had grazing paddocks in different places, was in the habit of turning his cows on the road and letting them graze on their way to the paddock. He would be near the! cattle all the time, and as soon as a ranger appeared would begin to drive the animals and so prevent the-ranger from impounding them. Mr. Matthews stated that his client had a perfectly reasonable explanation of his movements on the day in ques, tion, and he denied that the cows were on the road. His cattle were in wonderful condition and very heavy milkers, and he did not like to hurry them and excite them, and so just took them slowly. He denied that he had ever been spoken to by a ranger. Inspector Jones asked that no penalty be inflicted, as the case was' being brought as a warning to other offenders. Upon defendant promising not to loiter in future, he was convicted and discharged on payment of 12/ costs.
