ON THE INCREASE.

DUNEDIN'S UNEMPLOYED. DISMISSALS BY FIRMS. , (By Telegraph—Own Correspondent.) DUXEDLV, this day. When discussing the finance committee's report at a meeting of the City Council last evening a councillor referred to the fact that the number of unemployed depending , upon the No. 5

scheme io Dunedin was diminishing. This was satisfactory, he said, but, on the other hand, the number of men on sustenance had very greatly increased, the numljer standing at between 1100 and 1200. It would appear that need in the city had not diminished as they had anticipated.

The chairman of the committee, a Labour member, in reply, admitted that the number of unemployed was not decreasing. The increase in Dunedin was due to several causes. In the first place the number who could now register as unemplo% r ed had been increased because restrictions which had prevented many people from receiving sustenance had been removed by the Government. Another' cause of increased unemployed was due to certain employers dismissing employees to evade the effects of the new labour legislation.
