HEAVY COURT COSTS.

OTAHUHXT TRAFFIC OFFENCE. The unreasonable scale of court costs for tratlie o lie noes was criticised by ilr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., in the Police Court at Otahuhu yesterday. Tn the case in question the expenses claimed by witnesses totalled £3(i IS/, besides the court costs of £1 14/, which would have been a rather severe penalty for the offence of dangerous driving. This unusually high claim was entered by three witnesses who had been brought from Hawera on two occasions and was based on the usual allowance of S/ per day and 3/0 per niglit, plus travelling expenses at 0(1 per mile and loss, of time. Mr. Hunt remarked that it was unreasonable to ask any man to pay tliw>e costs, which were out of all proportion to the offenee, and he fixed the witnesses' expenses at £7 10/.
