PLANTING OF TREES.

CELEBRATION TO-MORROW.

Arbor Day, which originated in the State of Nebraska in 1872," and was first recognised in New Zealand in 1892 is to be observed on a comprehensive scale in Auckland to-morrow, particuiarly with a view of getting children interested in the movement. In addition to ceremonies planned by local bodies at the request of the Minister of Internal Affairs, the Hon. W. E Parry, school children will widely observe the occasion.

Arrangements have been made to plant 21 trees—three kaa-aka, f our pohutukawa, three puriri, three totara four kowhai and four rewarewa—at the back of the Winter Gardens in the Auckland Domain. At 11 a.m. another ceremony will take place on the slope, of tlio Outer Domain at the back of the New Zealand Institute for the Blind The tree planting will be part of a scheme to extend the native section to a part of the Auckland Domain which at present is -implanted. This) oeremony will be. attended by representatives of the Auckland City Council, other local bodies, and representatives of the New Zealand Institute of Horticulture.

A short address,' appropriate to the occasion, will be given by Mr. G. F, Joseph, chairman of the New Zealand Institute of Horticulture. Puriri trees will be planted on behalf of the Auckland Transport Board, Auckland Hospital Board and Auckland Power Board' kowhai trees on behalf of the Auckland Harbour Board, Auckland Education Board and Auckland Institute and Museum Council, and totaras, karakas and rewarewas to represent other organisations, including tTie New Zealand Institute of Horticulture and the Great South Road Beautifying Soeietv. The children of the Parnell School will visit St. Stephen's Cemetery, and on the cliffs plant 12 pohutukawas. The children of the Richmond Road and Grey Lynn schools will visit Grey Lynn. Park, and there plant a selection of NewZealand native trees.

At Devonport the Mavor, Mr. H. F W. Meikle, and Mr. W. J. Lyon, M.P. for Waitemata, will visit the local schools, and short addresses will be given on the importance of Arbor Day and the need of caring for trees.

11l One Tree Hill borough a treeplanting ceremony will be held at the Cornwall Park School. The Mount Albert Borough Council has arranged for a ceremony at tlie Asquith Avenue entrance of Fowlds Park at 2 p.m.', which will be attended by representatives of the Mount Albert Borough Council and the children of all the schools in the Mount Albert area. An address will be given by Mr. V. P. Fisher. At Otahuhu a ceremony will be held at Sturges Park at 2.30, when the speaker will be Miss L. Cranwell, botanist at the Auckland War Memorial Museum.
