SCHOOLMASTER'S DEATH. I MR. J. L. I. NEWHOOK'S CAREER, j Many old boys and ex-pupils of the Auckland Grammar School will be sorry | to hear that Mr. J. L. I. Ne\Miook, j science master of the Auckland Grammar School, suddenly collapsed and ■ died this morning. Mr. Newhook had complained of feeling unwell earlier in the morning, and when resting in the masters' common room he collapsed and died. Joining the staff in 1911 in the capacity of a science master, Mr. Newhook had been teaching for nearly 20 years, and the thousands of boys who passed through his hands will remember how popular and what,an important part of the school he was. Mr. Newhook, who had been science master at the Auckland Grammar School for some 25 years, was born at Newbury and came to Auckland in 1913. He had been a teacher in the county schools at New bury and had also taught under the London County Council. When he arrived in Auckland he taught in primary schools. Before leaving Engl.uid Mr. Newhook was keenly interested in cricket and played the game in that country. During his early associations with the Auckland Grammar School lie followed closely the doings of the lirst eleven and went everywhere the team played. Mr. Newhook will be well remembered by many old boys in that connection; In the early war years lie was a keen member of the Eden and Epsom Tennis Club. Mr. Newhook was well read and followed keenly political and social happenings, both national and international, particularly before he left England for New Zealand. His sister is in the teaching profession at Tauranga.
