LEAGUE FOOTBALL.

FIRST TEST MATCH: TEAM'S OPENING WORK-OUT. TRAINING AT CARLAW PARK. The selected members of the New Zealand team for the first Test match on Saturday next assembled yesterday at the Rugby League's office, where they met the New Zealand Council. Afterwards they were medically examined and ail passed the doctor. . , ~ . During the afternoon they had then, first tryout on Carlaw Park. Mr. A. 1. McClymont has charge of the team and had the men working out several, movements. Hemi was practising goal kicks and was most successful from all angles and distances. Other members also had attempts and their work showed there is 110 dearth of men who can steer the ball between the posts, the captain, S. Watene, having marked success. The forwards are a hefty lot and showed some pace when tried out in passing bouts. By the look of them the pack is one of the most even as far as weight is concerned that has been pitted against England's might for many seasons. Xhis morning the whole team were at physical jerks and during the afternoon were back on Carlaw Park for further instruction in team work. SCHOOLS AND REFEREES. i REMARKS BY ENGLISH OFFICIAL. Addressing • the schools' management committee of the Auckland Rugby .League last evening, Mr. Alfred Townend, of the English Rugby League and chairman of the amateur sub-committee, said that in England, as in Auckland and other parts of New Zealand, schoolboys were supplied j with playing gear, and the school commit- 1 tee was_ subsidised in various ways" to carry on its work in the cradle of the game. The speaker dealt interestingly with different aspects of organisation and with the international growth of Rugby League, and on the motion of the president, Mr. 11. E. Newport, was accorded an enthusiastic vote of thanks.

j Subsequently the visitor received a hearty welcome at the meeting of the Auckland Keferees' Association at Carlaw Park. Mr. Townend opened by stating tliat the perfect referee was hot yet born. It was the fervid or blind club partisanship which contributed largely to the troubles of referees, and yet such partisanship was as indispensable as the referee, "the policeman of the game." The speaker said they had the same difficulties about rule interpretation as were probably experienced in Australia and New Zealand. Commenting directly on play and its control, Mr. Townend said that in England when a scrum went down ten yards from touch the referees stood generally on the open side, but he thought that the practice of standing on the blind, or short, side to see any offside play, as done by Australian referees, was to be commended. When thanked by the chairman, Mr. LE- Bull, Mr. Townend said that he was enjoying his tour immensely, and hoped to renew acquaintance with this part of the world.
