SOIVIE USEFUL TRIALS. PREPARING FOR SPRING. LANDLUBBER'S GOOD FIVE. After another heavy frost last night tile weather conditions were perfect for training at Ellerslie this morning. No. 3 grass track was open, and the going was better than it has been during the ■ last few weeks. Rereatu gave Haputale a start at the five-furlong pest, and was doing the better at the finish, after running the distance in 1.9 2-0, Haputale's time being 1.10 2-5. Persian Lady was given an easy hallmile, which she covered in 06 l-ss. Zane Grey completed a round in 1.50 2-5, taking 1.20 4-5 for his last six furlongs. Royal Appellant, who worked at the same time, "was going very easily while traversing five furlongs in 1.12 1-5. Speedfast was allotted <1 useful task, but was not timed, and King Ara, after schooling, sprinted three furlongs in 41 1-os. Solas got to the end of a round in 1.48 3-5, being timed to run her last six furlongs in 1.23 3-5. Tybalt came home with her over the last three furlongs, which he covered in 41 4-ss. Versant, after commencing slowly over a round, ran the distance in 1.48 1-5, the last six furlongs being traversed in 1.23. It was a good workout, as he carried a solid weight. Lady Diana ran home from the three-furlong post in 40s> and Kilonsoa, who followed immediately after, covered the same ground in 38 2-ss. It was a smart effort, and the best of the morning over the distance. Landlubber also recorded the. best time over five furlongs, running the distance in 1.5 2-5. Roman Mascot finished up her work by running the last three furlongs in 41 3-ss. Caliente, Lord Val and Tidewaiter were bunched at the conclusion of half a mile in 53 3-ss. Teddy Boy and Mainland wore sent half a mile, taking 40 2-5s for their last three furlongs. Valspear did sound work, but was not going better tlian 15s to the furlong. Lone Flier and Etama sprinted three furlongs in 42 2-ss. They both worked nicely. Horowhenua was doing better than United at the conclusion of six furlongs in 1.21 4-5.
Trevace and Te Hai were timed to Tun half a mile in 53 l-ss, the former being in front, though they were not doing their best. Master Brierly finished up useful work by sprinting down the straight, hitting .out very freely. Hunting Chorus and the Vaals —Country Air gelding got to the end of half a mile in 545, there being little between them at the end. Illumani was given an easy five furlongs, which took 1.12 4-5. Carshalton registered 55 3-5s for half a mile, and Tooley Street ran the last three furlongs of his work in 43 2-ss. Whirl-mint, who started slowly over a round, was under restraint throughout tile last six furlongs, which took 1.28. Gaar Vaals, who went off behind Whirlmint at the three-furlong post, was timed to run that distance in 41 l-ss. Marjory Daw sprinted down the straight, handling the going well. King Ara (T. Williams) was sent out to school over three hurdles, but came to grief at the first owing to the glare at the time. He was remounted and jumped the remaining two fences in good style. ' •
