GIRLS' HOSTEL.

PROPERTY VALUE UPHELD,

A short sitting of the Assessment Court was held at the Town Hall yesterday. Five objections to valuations made by the city valuer, Mr. P. F. Xotley, were set down for hearing, but only one was dealt with, three being withdrawn. In the fifth there was no appearance of the objector.

An objection to the assessment of £140 on a building in Owen's Road. Epsom, used as a hostel for girls of the Grammar School, was sustained. The objection was on the grounds that the assessment was not on an economic basis, but the chairman, Mr. W. R. McKean, S.M., while expressing the opinion that the 20 per cent, as allowed by law, did not cover the outgoings, said that was a matter for the legislation to deal with. He informed the objector that had the valuation been higher he would have sustained it.
