WATER PIPES FROZEN.
HOLD-UP ON BRIDGE WORK. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) WHANGAREI, Monday. There was an unusual hold-up at the Victoria bridge works this morning due to the failure of the water supply to run. It was rather uncomfortable for the gang of workmen who turned up on th•; bridge at 7 o'clock on a bitterly cold morning not to be able to start toil and o-et warm until the best part of an hour had ela]K3C'd. The cause of the delay was the freezing of the pipes which conveyed the water to the concrete mixer. It " was necessary to thaw out some of the pipes* by lighting fires underneath them. The wheeling platforms were also covered with ice and before the men could start with the barrows the ice had to be chipped off, and the surface -anded. Work was finally started ill earnest at 7.45 a.m.
