STANDING DOWN.
I wonder if the public are aware of the desperate situation of 37 married men and their. families in this city owing to the men having been put off work by the Transport Board. They have to stand down for a fortnight before they can get sustenance or any kind of relief or help. They have seen the Mayor and Mr. Lark and the replacement officer, and those gentlemen have wired to' the Minister to see if tlie men could not be placed on sustenance at once and were told it could not be done. Now these men were earning £3 10/ a week and some people think that v they should have saved a little for <a rainy day. Well, let them try to keep a large family (one man had six and another has eleven children under 15 years of age) and pay 22/0 a week for rent, and with the rising cost of living, and they will see how hard it is. Surely the Minister "could have broken the rule regarding standing down for a fortnight in the face of such a desperate situation. OXE OF THEM.
