H.M.S. ACHILLES.
DUE ON SEPTEMBER 9.
FIRST OF NEW CRUISERS. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. The Minister of Defence, the Hon. F. Jones, announced to-day that H.M.S. Achilles, the new cruiser for the New Zealand station, left GibraUer oil July 17 and that a report received from her commanding officer and concurred in by the authorities concerned, indicated that she will arrive in Auckland on Wednesday September 9.
Serving in trie Archilles are the New Zealand ratings who were in the Diomede when the latter vessel left the Dominion last year for special service under the Admiralty, and they will be returning to their homes after an absense of approximately 12 months.
The Achilles will be the first of two Leander class cruisers for service on the New Zealand station. The other vessel, H.M.S. Leander, the original ship of a class described as one of the major triumphs of British naval construction and design, will arrive to replace H.M.S. Dunedin toward the end of the year or early next year.
