LEMONS PLENTIFUL
SHORTAGE OF BANANAS,
HEAVY VEGETABLE SUPPLY
A good supply of lemons came on to the city markets to-day, and the sale was slow except lor choice quality. Apples and pears were in fair demand, although Delicious, which were plentiful, sold at low rates. Hothouse grapes are now very scarce, and choice quality lines realised high values to-day. The season is practically over. There was a fair demand for large-size grapefruit and oranges. Queensland pineapples brought lower prices than they have for some tune. There was a shortage of ripe bananas to-day, due to the Monowai's shipment from Fiji being in green condition. Ripe bananas brought up to 25/, but the green fruit which were almost unsaleable by auction brought from 10/ to, 11/ 1 )C1 ' Quotations: —Apples: Delicious, 2/6 to 4/6 case: Ballarat, 5/ to 7/; Dougherty, 3/ to 5/; Granny Smith, 5/ to 7/; Jonathan, 6/ to 8/6; Munro, 4/ to 5/; Rome Beauty, 5/ to 7/; Stunner, 5/ to 7/6; Winanp, 6/ to 8/. Oranges: Australian, 18/ to 22/ case; Cook Islands, 14/ to 20/, repacks. Grapefruit: New Zealand, extra choice, 6/ to 7/6 case; others, 3/ to 5/6; Californian, 32/0. Lemons: Choice, cured, 7/6 to 9/6 case; others, 3/ to 6/6. Bananas: Ripe, up to 25/ case; originals (green), 10/ to 11/. Pines: Queensland, 11/ to 15/. Grapes: Hothouse, Coleman, extra choice, up to 3/7 per lb; Coleman, others, 2/6 to 3/. Vegetables.
Cabbage was in heavy supply to-day, and prices were a little lower. Cauliflower was also plontif.ul, but prices remained about the same as last week. Large quantities of onions were available, and prices were very low for the time of the year. Very heavy offerings "of celery came forward, best quality lines meeting with a fair demand, but inferior sorts were hard to quit. Good supplies of both Island and local kumaras met a good demand. Good pumpkins were a little firmer in price. Quotations: —Beet, 6d to 1/3 dozen: cooking celery, 3d to 8d bundle; dessert celery, 9d to 2/3 bundle: carrots, 6d to 1/ dozen; cauliflowers, 2/6 to 5/6 sack, on benches 9d to 2/ dozen; cabbages. 1/6 to 5/6 sack, on benches 6d to 2/3 dozen; cucumbers, hothouse, 3/ to 5/6 dozen; French beans, hothouse, 6d to lOd lb; green peas, 6d to 9d lb; kumaras, Island 14/6 cwt, Tauranga 5/ to 6/ bag; leeks, 9d to 1/6 dozen; lettuce. 1/6 to 9/6 case; marrows, 1/6 to 2/9 dozen; onions, local, 2/6 to 4/ bag, Californian 12/ cental; new potatoes, 3/ to 8/6 sugar bag; Southern potatoes 7/ to 8/ cwt, Ohakune Sutton's supreme 6/6 to 7/6, other varieties. 4/6 to 5/6; Brussels sprouts. 3d to 8(1 lb; pumpkins, best Crown and Triumble, 5/ to 9/6 sack, ordinary 2/6 to 4/ sack; parsnips, 6d to 9d dozen; radish, 1/ dozen: rhubarb. 4/ to 6/ dozen; spinach, 6d to 1/6 dozen; spring onions, 1/ to 1/9 bundle; swedes, 2/6 to 3/6 bag; turnips, 3d dozen.
Poultry. At to-day's auctions the supply of poultry was medium and the demand was very keen. The prices paid were higher in most lines. Selling rates were as follow: Cockerels: Heavy breeds, prime, 4/6 to (5/(5 each; not prime, 2/l> upwards; light breeds, prime, 3/ to 4/6; not prime, 1/6 upwards. Fat roosters: Heavy breeds, prime, 2/6 to 3/6; light breeds, 2/ to 2/6. Pat hens: Heavy breeds, 3/ to 4/: light breeds, 2/ to 2/6. Pullets: Heavy breeds, best, 3/6 to 4/6; smaller, 1/6 upwards: light breeds, best, 3/6 to 4/6; smaller, 1/6 upwards. Drakes: Young, prime, 2/ to 3/; smaller, 1/6 upwards; old, 1/6 to 2/3. Ducks: Young, 2/6 to 3/6; old. 1/6 to 2/3. Turkey hens: 4/ to 5/6; gobblers, 6/ to 11/. Guinea fowls. 3/ to 4/. Butter and Eggs. Egg prices remain unaltered, as follow: Hen: First grade. 1/5% dozen; B grade, 1/4%; C grade, 1/1%. Duck: First grade, 1/5%: B grade, 1/4%; C grade, 1/2%. Farmers' butter, 1/1 to 1/3% per lb.
