INTERFERING WITH BUSINESS.

(By FRANK A. GARBUTT.)

Society cannot afford unemployment—for if there is enough unemployment it will impoverish all. Neither can the Government afford unemployment, for if there are enough unemployed the Administration will fail. Unemployment cannot be cured by creating useless jobs, nor by working part time, nor by shortening hours—although hours will shorten automatically; these at best are temporary measures. Unemployment can only be cured by creating useful, productive and profitable jobs for every man, woman and child who wants to work, at which they can work as long or as little as they desire. To make jobs profitable, the worker must produce plenty and to produce plenty lie must use labour-saving machinery. Surplus labour cannot be absorbed producing necessities because there is already a surplus. We. can eat only so much bread. Therefore, we must produce luxuries for which the demand is unlimited. Our selfish tax spenders taxed luxuries avowedly to "soak the rich," but really to get more money to squander. Instead of mulcting the rich, they beat millions of workmen out of profitable jobs creating luxuries, which by mass production would become cheap enouaii for the masses to buy. Governmental interference, with business perpetuates unemployment. It exacts a heavy toll from both labour and capital.— (N.A.X.A.)
