STABLE AND TRACK NOTES

DOING LIGHT TASKS. Queen Brierly. sister to Miss Lu and Brierly, is doing 1 i^lit tasks on a farm at Takanini and is stated to have furnished a good deal since last autumn. Queen Brierly was started three times during the present season without success, and her form was rather moderate. However. she is a tilly that may do a lot better as a three-year-old in the new season.

A LIKELY IMPROVER. Peter Jackson was responsible for an encouraging performance when he finished a close fourth in the Parliamentary Handicap at Trentham. He was well back at the home turn, but finished on very solidly over the final stages. The Xigger Minstrel gelding claims an engagement in the Palmerston North Handicap at Awapuni on Saturday, and if he has made any improvement since he raced at Trentham he will be dangerous. WORKING WELL AT RICCARTON. t'oncertpitch. winner of the Great Faster Handicap and a favourite for the Winter t up. has been working well at Riccarton. In the Claremont Handicap, to be run at the South Canterbury Hunt Club's meeting next- Saturday, t'oncertpitch has been weighted at 0.3. Kpris is top-weight with 0.13. and the distance is one mile and 35 yards. Kpris has had recent racing, and in that direction will liave a big advantage over Coneertpitch. FROM A SPEEDY FAMILY. JMntus had a very easy win in the Novice Stakes at Waimate last Saturday and he may go on to much better form. He comes from a family noted for speed. His sire, Songbird, by Ivilbroiiey. was a brilliant sprinter, and he lias left a few smart gallopers. Olga. the dam of Mutus. is by the Wellington Cup winner Kilrain from tin' Stepniak—Waimate mare Russian Maid, a sister to Volodia, a brilliant sprinter in her day. WIN FOR LADY OWNER. Marsyas, the winner of the maiden event at the Hawke's Bay Hunt Club's meeting on Saturday, is a two-year-old brown colt by Hunting Song from the Absurd—Makepeace mare Marsurd. He is a brother to Marsong and Wlniddon Chase and the last foal of his dam. who died in 1933. Marsyas. who was bred by Mr. P. Annan, is raced on lease by Mesdames R. Carrington and R. E. Groweott, and is trained by J. Clements.

GOING ON THE RIGHT WAY. Tybalt is training on hi a satisfactory manner under A. McCurdy s supervision and is steadily improving in condition. He has been allotted a few short sprints dining the last couple of weeks and has acquitted himself well: therefore, it will not be long before the Romeo gelding is ready to reappear in public. When at his best Tybalt is capable of holding his own with the pick of horses racing at the present time and more money should come his way later on. CHANGED OWNERSHIP. When Blazon ran in the hurdle race at Waimate on Saturday he was making his first appearance in the colours of the Southland owners, Messrs. W. E. and J. S. Hazlett, who purchased him recently. He remains in the stable of the Oamaru trainer, J. Boss, but doubtless he wijl eventually join the other horses of his new owners in Southland. In the meantime he is booked to race at Riccarton next month, and may be an early winner over hurdles. NOVICE JUMPER WINS EASILY. Redolent was responsible for a very attractive performance when he won the hurdle race at Waimate (says a southern writer). It was not a strong field, but he was ill front all the way and won easily after a good exhibition of jumping. He is only a novice at the game and he is likely to go on to much better deeds. Redolent is by Panmure from Redowa. a mare not in the Stud Book, but previously the dam of Baldowa and Red Boa. two good performers, both sired by Balboa.-

GETTING READY FOR NEW SEASON.j Nov that the new season is near at hand Master Brierly is being sent along a bit faster in his work. The chestnut gelding looks in great heart, and judging by the dash he is putting into his tasks he will have to be reckoned with before the coming season is very far advanced. Caliente. in the same stable, is also in tip-top condition and is thriving exceptionally well on the work R. S. Bagby is giving her. Both these horses are likely to add to their winning record within the next few months. WON AT FIRST START. According to southern reports Gay Boa. a Southland gelding, won the Hunters Plate at Waimate. \ v ery easily, after being third till half a mile from home. It was his first start in a race, and as he is only four years old he should do better. Hot Tea easily beat the others, but had no chance with the winner. Tippling, the favourite, seemed to be going well enough to the turn, but did.not come 011. He gave Mr. Ken Austin, ot the Elderslie Stud, his first race ride in Xew Zealand. Before he came here he was one of the leading amateurs of New South Wales, and he may be riding at Riceartcin next month in the Gloucester Cup. "UNFLINCHING COURAGE." Master Turbine was the surprise of the j Hunt Cup Steeplechase at Hastings on Saturday (sa>s the "Hawke's Bay Herald"). Ho is not much more than a pony in height, but is a sturdy sort, by King Soult from a Captain Webb mare. It is a first-class jumping pedigree and Master Turbine showed that lie could jump well. He has a lot of pace. too. and was entirely responsible for the fast pace set all the way, the race being run in faster time than any of the other two miles and a half steeplechases run in till district this winter. With more racing experience and a racing preparation Master Turbine should prove quite a useful steeplechaser under a Mailt weight, for he is possessed of unflinching courage, added to his other oualities.
