FRANKTON JUNCTION.
REMODELLING' OF YARDS. £10,000 GRANT AUTHORISED. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) HAMILTON, Wednesday. Advice was received here to-day from Mr. C. A. Barrell, M.P., that Parliament has authorised a vote of £10,000 for the remodelling of the Frankton Junction railway station yards. Improvements to the station and the platform are under consideration. It is understood that most of the money will be spent on the yards between the Commerce Street crossing and tlie engine sheds. At present there is only one line from the engine sheds to the station and owing to the size and importance of the junction a double line is necessary. Moreover, a bottleneck exists in the present yards, and even a minor derailment would disorganise all traffic on tlie Main Trunk and Kotorua lines. New engine sheds were recently constructed, but the lines have not been touched for years. The work will commence immediately.
For years the Hamilton business men have agitated for a new modern station at Frankton and the elimination of the present Hamilton and Claudelsnds stations, and disappointment is expressed ft at the grant failed to make provision for these works.
"It is very gratifying that Parliament realises the importance of 1-rankton Junction as a railway centre,'' commented the Mayor, Mr. J. R. low today. Platform improvements, he said, would be welcomed bv every resident of the town and the thousands of visitors.
Mr. H. D. Caro, president of the Hamilton Chamber of Commerce, endorsed the Mayor's remarks.
