WOMEN'S INSTITUTES.
HELENS VILLE. The popularity of the institute was evidenced by the large gathering in the Lyric Theatre recently to celebrate the fifth anniversary. The hall was beautifully decorated by members of the gardening circle, who also presented shoulder sprays to the president and secretary. The president, Mrs. Lambert, extended a welcome to all. Two trios were sung b3 r members of the musical circle, and Mrs. Wilson rendered a vocal solo. A playette entitled "Henpecked" was staged by Mesdames Nicol, Colnett, Thomson, Jenkins and Smith, under the direction of Mr. Hunt. The pupils of the Helensville High School sang several part-songs, under the leadership of Mr. Abel. MANGAWEKA. The birthday meeting of the Manga-'! weka Women's Institute was helcl recently. Unfortunately, owing to bad weather and blocked roads, many were unable to attend and the birthday cake, which had been sent out for a country member to decorate, could not bo brought to the meeting. Mrs. Jordan gave a brief demonstration of padding and covering cardboard boxes. Mesdames Kirkby and Williams entertained with a humorous sketch, and the singing circle presented two songs in parts. Points prizes for the year were presented, the winner being Miss M. Dickinson and the runner-up Mrs. Oulsnam. Mrs. Billinghurst, sen., won the potato trophy. Competition winners were: Mustard pickles, Miss M. Dickinson 1, Mrs. R. Dickson 2 and 3; Madeira cake, Mins Ida Dickinson 1, Mrs. R. Dickson 2 and 3.
