BRITAIN AND TARIFF.

DOMINION BUTTER IMPORTS

(Received 11.30 a.m.) LONDON, July 21. It is understood that behind the question asked in the House of Commons yesterday by Major R. H. Dorraan Smith (Con., Hants) of the Minister of Agriculture, Mr. Walter Elliot, and the President of the Board of Trade, Mr. Walter Runciman, whether there was an understanding that a duty should not be imposed on the Dominions' dairy produce, is a search for a reason for the abandonment of the proposal. Mr. Elliot communicated with the Dominion Prime Ministers in June, 1935, that he intended to place a duty of 15/ a cwt on Dominion butter and 30/ a cwt on foreign butter.

Mr. Elliot and Mr. Runciman are not informative, but it is generally assumed that the scheme's abandonment is not unconnected with Dr. Earle Page's recent discussions with the two Ministers.
