DANGEROUS FIRE.
SPECTACULAR SYDNEY BLAZE
(Received 9.30 a.m.)
SYDNEY, this day.
Fire occurred last night in what is regarded as the dangerous zone of the city, at Surry Hills, when the top floor of a five-storey building occupied by the Commonwealth Drug Company, was found well alight, large quantities of inflammable materials and liquids making a spectacular sight, which could be seeu for miles.
Five firemen were severely burned on their faces, arms and bodies when two drums of oil exploded and sprayed them, necessitating their removal to hospital. The fire gutted the top and severely damaged the contents of the lower floors.
Six firemen, including the deputy chief officer, W. Beare, were trapped on the top floor and had to fight for their lives against flames and ' deadly carbon monoxide fumes, until comrades came to their aid.
Damage to the building and stock amounts to thousands of pounds.
