OBITUARY.
PROMINENT CHURCHMAN,
REV. H. R. MACKINTOSH.

Private advice received in Dunedin conveys news of the death, at the Isle of Skye last month, of the Rev. Hugh Ross Mackintosh, one of the most distinguished Presbyterian theologians of his" day. Dr. Mackintosh was an old and intimate friend of Principal of Dunedin. and was born at Paisley, Scotland, on October 31, 1870, being the second son of the Rev. Alex. Mackintosh, of Paisley. He was educated at George Watson's College, Edinburgh University, and the Universities of Freiburg, Halle and Marburg. He was ordained to the ministry of the Free Church of Scotland in 15913, and was moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland in 1932. Dr. Mackintosh wrote many theological works, articles and reviews and was the 'first British non-Anglican to be made doctor of divinity by the University of Oxford, and so far the only Presbyterian. He was also a D.Phil. (Edinburgh and Oxon) and Tli.D. (Marburg). He was professor of systematic theology at New College, Edinburgh, from 1904, and professor of Christian dogmatics from 1935. MR. GEORGE F. MELLARS. A well-known Auckland estate agent, Mr. George Frederick Mellars, has died at the age of 70 years. He was born at Woodend, near Christcliurch, and went to the Waikato, where his father had timber-milling interests at Oliaupo and Taupiri. Mr. Mellars was well known as country representative of the Government Life Insurance- Office throughout the Waikato and Bay of | Plenty districts. After spending a number of years in the timber business in Australia, Mr. Mellars established a sliarebroker's business in Coromandel, and was chairman of the Coromandel Sharebrokers' Association. In 1911 he opened an estate agent's business in Queen Street, Auckland. After his retirement in 1933 he acted as official bowl tester for the Auckland Bowling Centre. Mr. Mellars was a member of the executive committee of the Real Estate Institute of Auckland for a number of years, and a foundation member of the Coromandel Bowling Club and also a member of the Reniuera Bowling Club. Mr. Mellars is survived by liis wife, who lives in Station Road, Remuera, and four sons. MR. A. E. BAXTER. Advice has been received of the death at his home at Sumner this morning of Mr. A. E. Baxter. Mr. Baxter, who was US years of age. was one of New Zealand's most distinguished water-colour artists. He spent some years painting on the Continent and had his work accepted bv the Eoyal Academy and the Paris Salon. One of the principals of Baxters, Ltd., Christcliurch, Mr. Baxter was held in great esteem in both business and art circles and his death will be widely regretted. He leaves a widow, two ® daughters and a son. d ° r MRS. M. E. SETH-SMITH. !S One of Auckland's oldest residents, Mrs. Mary Emily Seth-Smith, has died i- at the age of So years. Purclias, was minister. ° I Mrs. Seth-Smith was the wife of the late ' Judge Seth-Smith, of the Native Land i Court.
