RACE-DAY TRAFFIC.
ONE-WAY TAXI CAB FARES.
COUNCIL REFUSES INCREASE,
| On the recommendation of the traffic | superintendant, Mr. Cecil Bland, the Auckland City Council last evening refused the request of Air Transport and Touring Automobiles of New Zealand, Limited, for an amendment to the by-laws to allow taxi proprietors to charge a fare of 1/ for each mile on special work. The company instanced •such work as races, and other occasions when the loading was definitely only one way. The report of the traffic superintendent, which was adopted, recommended that the application be declined. Permission to charge special fares on such occasions would be difficult to supervise, said Mr. Bland, and would ; cause confusion to the travelling public. | He pointed out that the taxi-cab fares | were fixed on the recommendation of the taxi-cab companies, and if it was now found that the fare was not sufli-] ciently profitable, the proper method would be to apply for permission to increase the fares as a whole. There was provision for additional fnres to be charged for race work. By obtaining a temporary passenger service license from the No. 2 Licensing Authority drivers were permitted to charge separate fares at a rato of 2/G per passenger.
