SMALLER TURNOVERS.

DISMISSAL OF HANDS. Dismissals of hands are taking place, it is reported, in several industries that, after increasing prices following higher labour costs, have failed to gain a full recompense. It is pointed out, however, tliat it is too soon to review the position, as the greater spending power by the public that the Government proposes to achieve has been realised to a limited extent only. Sections of the laundry, dyeing and pressing industry are stated to be among the industries affected. A representative of one firm said that since rates were increased to meet a 22J per cent rise in labour costs their business had dropped to an extent that negatived any increase in cash turnover. He thought, however, that things would find their own level, and he ascribed dismissals in his own firm to seasonal causes rather than to the effectß of the recent legislation.
