MAORI MASCOT.

GIFT TO MR. JORDAN.

MAYOR DEMONSTRATES USE,

An apt demonstration of how Mr. Jordan should use a Maori mere in his various capacities as High Commissioner was given by the Mayor, Mr. Ernest Davis, when he presented Mr. W. J. Jordan with a mere at the farewell in the Town Hall to-day.

Mr. Davis said he wished to make the gift as ft, personal present and lie hoped it would bo a mascot. When Tooley Street merchants came to him he suggested that Mr. Jordan should lay the mere warningly on the table before him. Lifting the mere to his shoulder, Mr. Davis suggested that Mr. Jordan should carry it in that deferential manner when lie interviewed the Prime Minister of Great Britain. "And when you go to Geneva remember the old Maori way," said the Mayor, as he brandished the mere above his head.
