GOLD AND CASH.
SALESMAN IN COURT. CONFESSION TO POLICE. Pleading guilty to a charge of breaking and entering by day, Gordon Keith Adams, aged 31, salesman, of S, Vincent Street, was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence by Mr. W. R. McIvean, S.M., in the Police Court this morning. Leslie Argyle, a goldbuyer, said that on the afternoon of June 23, returning to his office, he found that the glass panel in the door was broken, the aperture being big enough to enable a man to insert his hand and open the lock. A drawer had been broken open and £5 18/ in cash and old gold to the value of between £0 and £7 had been taken. About a month later a Mr. T. A. Hailing brought to him for sale some gold that he recognised as part of what had been stolen. Thomas A. Hailing, engraver, said that he knew accused. He met accused in the tram one day, and accused mentioned that he had some old gold to sell. Accused asked witness to sell it for him, as he was in the trade and might be able to obtain a little more for it. Witness took it to Mr. Argyle, who said it had been previously stolen from him and retained it. Bail was renewed on a surety of £25, with the consent of Senior Detective S. G. Hall, who said that when accused heard that inquiries were being made, ho gave himself up and made a complete confession.
