CELEBRATIONS AT WANGANUI

CHAIRMAN'S FATAL COLLAPSE.

WANGANUI, Sunday

The death occurred suddenly this afternoon of a well-known Wanganui business man, Mr. W. M. Luxford, who | collapsed when presiding at celebrations in connection with the twenty-fifth anniversary of the local St. Vincent de Paul Society. Mr. Luxford concluded a review of the society's work and resumed. A few minutes later he collapsed and died. Mr. Luxford, who was 60 years of age, was born at Wellington and educated at the Thorndon primary school. He was a farmer in the Waverley district for six years, and then he went to the west coast of the South Island. He left the South Island to join the firm of Messrs. A. Hatrick and Company in Wanganui, where he later established a business of his own. For the past 37 years he was the active head of the well-known firm of W. M. Luxford and Company, Ltd.

Mr. Luxford was a member of the Wanganui City Council for ten years and retired six years ago. He was a prominent rifle shot, and for many years was I president of the Wanganui Defence i Rifle Club.
