HERNE BAY SAILING CLUB

ANNUAL PRIZE NIGHT. In spite of the continuous rain there was a good attendance on Saturday evening of senior and junior members at the third prisse distribution of the Heme Buv .Sailing Club, held in the.'Point Erin Kiosk. In the abseiice : of the commodore, Mr. Geo. Dennes, the senior.; vice-president, Mr. W. H- , Hurleiv. feesided, being supported by C'afttaln.-.;liv;H,-.Sergeant and Messrs. C. 11. X;: Palriietv R. . Bell-Booth, A. O. Taylor and R. Bellve. Mr. Hurley welcomed the members and visitors and congratulated tlieni for braving the elements. Before proceeding witli tile programme, Mr. Hurley referred to the recent bereavement of Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Dennes by the death of their daughter, and all present stood, as a liijirk of respect. Apologies were received from Mr. Ernest Davis, who sent his best wishes for continued progress and congratulations to Master Des. Hurley, the youngest skipper in the club, on winning his cup. Apologies were also received from Mr. T. L. Thompson, chairman of the Auckland Regatta Committee, and Captain W. S. Percy, president of the club, now at Suva. -.'he Prime Minister, the lit. Hon. M. J. Savage, member for the district, also sent an apology and conveyed his best wishes to the club. Mr. Hurley briefly reviewed the past season, during which 14 club races were held. The club's Silver Fern class , boats also competed by invitation at the Devonport, Tamaki, Richmond and Takapuna Clubs and the Anniversary- arid Northcote Regattas. The skill of the boys had greatly improved during the past season, one of the youngest members winning the Silver Fern class championship, and Norman Shaw the all-coiners' class championship. The work of Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Dennes and Master Colin Dennes (their lion, secretary) on behalf of the club was referred to by the chairman, Mr. Dennes being really the father of the club. With due regard for the safety of the boys, Mr. Dennes' policy was not to hold races unless weather conditions were favourable and several events had to be postponed. Thanks to his careful supervision, there had been no accidents. Some of the boys, having reached the nge limit, joined senior clubs and had won several races, Colin Dennes being the successful skipper in the Treyic Shield contest. Mr. Hurley also thanked Captain Percy and Mr. Ivo Dennes for their keen interest in the boys, and concluded by requesting Captain Sergeant to present the prizes. Captain Sergeant congratulated the club on its progress and said that they should be proud of their officers and the Silver Fern class, instituted by Mr. Geo. Dennes, and he was pleased to see the first,, boat built to the class, the Silver Fern, on exhibition in the hall. Boat sailing, said Captain Sergeant, made them alert and quick to act in an emergency. They should learn the racing rules and play the game properly. They were fortunate in having so many friends who donated the prizes, and he hoped the club would continue to prosper, as it was doing very good work among the juniors. The principal prize Winners were:— Master Des. Hurley's Valerie, winner of the Mayor's championship cup and flag, also live other prizes; Master Colin Dennes' Silver Fern, three prizes; Master Dave Taylor's Silver Fern (latter half of season), Mr. Bell-Booth's Cup and two other prizes; Endeavour, sailed by Master R. BellBooth, three prizes; Kandy Kid, sailed by Master B. Faire, three prizes; Master Max Bartley's Flying Cloud, three prizes; Masters D. and H. Hewson's Mary T., Mr. J. liawlinson's trophy and one other prize-; all-comers' class, Master Norman Shaw's Norena; cup presented-by Mr. Athol Hodgson for highest points, also the commodore's trophy and two other prizes;. Master J. Grevatt's Watchman, Mr. A. G. Taylor's Cup and one other prize; Masters J. Leyland's Heather, Jack Rews' Kohu, B. Cranwell's Whetu and E. Bailey's' one prize, For'ard hands' race: Silver I< ern class. Flying Cloud, sailed by Master L. Foote, 1; Kndeavour, It. Scott, 2; Kandy Kid, J. Reid, 3. All-comers' class; Baby Lois 1, Norena 2. Mr. C. H. T. Palmer, on behalf of the senior clubs, congratulated tlie officers and members on their success. The club was popular in Ponsonby and was carrying O'l the jrood work of many years ago, when the Home Bay Club existed In the same district, of which he was the founder and I the first commodore. Mr, Palmer referred to the success of the Silver Fern class and gave the bovs some Useful advice on sailing i their boats,'which, he said, was best learned when they were young. He advised them to plav the game and uphold their officers, and thev would continue to succeed. Mr. Bell-Booth thanked tlie donors of prizes, also the clubs which had put on races for the Silver Fern class. Mr. BellBooth, on behalf of the boys, presented Mrs Hurlev with a token of their appreciation of her work during the past season, which Mrs. Hurlev gracefully acknowledged. Mr Geo. Tvler, who supervised the building of the club's Silver Fern boats, was presented with a clock suitably inscribed. Mr. A. G. Taylor thanked, the Tress for tlieir assistance. After each club race, he said, there was a run on tlie Sports Edition bv - the bovs to read the report of the ' racin". Mr. W. A. Wilkinson replied on behalf of the "Auckland . Star" and said he was pleased to, learn that a number ot new Silver Ferns would be - built for-the .-coming season. >..■**» .
