PERMIT EXTENDED.
FRENCHWIAN WITHOUT MONEY. BOUVIER IN COURT AGAIN. For the third Saturday in succession Louis Joseph Bouvier, a Frenchman, described as a motor mechanic and explorer, appeared on rcmaiul in _ the Police Court, before Mr. W. R. McKean, S.M., this morning, on a charge deeming him to be an idle and disorderly person, with insufficient means of support.. The Frenchman, after spending a week on remand in the Auckland Prison, was last Saturday remanded in the care of the Salvation Army to appear to-day, when it was stated definite advice would be received from the Customs Department at. Wellington. When Bouvier stepped into the dock this morning, the Collector of Customs, Mr. J. Mcintosh, stated that he had been advised from Wellington that the Frenchman's temporary permit to remain in New Zealand had been extended until the end of August. "I had explained to my Department that Bouvier, although without money, was of good character," said Mr. Mcintosh. "As his permit has been extended until the end of next month, the Immigration Act does not now apply against him." Sub-Inspector Fox stated that apparently Bouvier himself had not yet been advised of the extension of his permit. "Major Perry, of the Salvation Army, says that during the week Bouvier has been in the Salvation Army Home he has worked very well, and that he is willing to take a position if he can get one," added Mr. Fox. "He has tried to raise his fare to Panama from friends, but so far he has been unsuccessful. Major Perry will keep him until he finds employment for Bouvier." In adjourning the case sine die the magistrate said that Bouvier could remain with the Salvation Army in the meantime. He told him that there was no reason why lie should not stay in the home until the end of next month. There, it seems, Bouvier, who is writing a book on his travels round the world, will remain until either a job or his fare to Panama is found for him.
