I VAST FARM AREAS USELESS. WASHINGTON, July 16. The Government's preliminary survey of damage caused by the drought shows that an area equal to the States of Pennsylvania, Massachusetts and Connecticut combined, formerly good farm land, is now useless for cultivated crops, because of erosion. Out of 1,003,000,000 acres surveyed, 50,000,000 were thus affected. In addition the top soil was found to have been washed off 125,000,000 more acres and 100.000,000 acres were suffering from a similar trend. The Weather Bureau states that the back of the drought has been broken and forecasts scattered showers and generally cooler weather except in Northern Nebraska and Kansas, where rises in temperature are expected. Wheat prices rose 5 cents in Kansas City yesterday and 44 cents in Chicago on reports that millers are buying all the available wheat. Another stimulus was a report that the Canadian wheat crop is deteriorating rapidly. I
