NEW AWARD CLAIM.

ENGINEERING TRADES. EMPLOYEES SEEK 44-HOUR WEEK. (By Telegraph.—rress Association.) WELLINGTON, Wednesday. A sitting of the Conciliation Council in the Dominion engineering and allied trades dispute was commenced to-day. Most of the day was occupied in considering the list of firms to be cited, and the discussion of the claims was commenced only late in the afternoon. Although the employers agreed with the principle of the 40-hour week, the employers' assessors pointed out that they considered exceptions were necessary in some cases. The applicants are the New Zealand Federated Ironmasters' Association and other employers, and the respondents are the New Zealand Council of the Amalgamated Engineering and Allied Trades Industrial Association, the New Zealand Federated Boilermakers, Iron and Steel Ship and Bridgebuilders' Industrial Association, the New Zealand Federated Moulders' Industrial Association, and other unions. The Commissioner, Mr. S. Ritchie, presided. The employers claimed a 44-hour week of five and a half days, and offered the following wages:—Patternmaker, 2/2; toolmaker, 2/1; moulders, 2/ to 1/9; fingineers, 2/ to 1/10; boilermakers, 2/; boys under 21, first year 17/0 a week, second year 25/, third year 32/0, fourth year 40/, fifth year 50/; improvers, 1/10 an hour; females, first year 15/ a week, second year 20/, third year 25/, fourth year 30/, fifth year 35/, thereafter 42/. The workers counter-claimed for a 40hour five-day week and a minimum rate of £5 10/ a week for all workers, with certain exceptions.
