UNION MOVEMENTS.

OTAGO AND SOUTHLAND. ';/ • v I AMALGAMATION QUESTION. (By Telegraph.—Special to "Star.") DUNEDIN; this day. • Efforts towards, the .formation of bigger "and stronger workers' organisations in Dunedin are still in the stages of discussion. The secretary of -the Shop Assistants' Union and. the Hairdressers' Union said : that r already one .union covered all the shop assistants in Otago and Southland, with the exception of butchers, grocers and hairdressers, but efforts were being made to bring'these sections together. So far as the other trade unions were concerned, it appears that the question of amalgamation has not been discussed by any organisation with the exception of those associated with the building industry. The Dunedin branch of the Amalgamated Carpenters and Joiners' Union passed a resolution in favour of la building trade union covering the whole of the industry.
