HIGHLY PLEASING MEAT AGREEMENT.
FOREIGN REDUCED. Australia's Long-Term Pact With Britain.' LEVY ON ARGENTINA, United Press Association. —Copyright. (Received 11 a.m.) LONDON, July 2. The Australian Associated Press is informed that the meat agreement [with Britain is thoroughly satisfactory to Australia. Not only does j it establish a levy of 2d on Argentine beef and nothing on Australia, but it also gives a reduction of the present Argentine quota and the Commonwealth's remains unchanged. The agreement will ije a long-term one and not subject to quarterly revision, thus ensuring Australia a continuous and expanding market. The agreement must be submitted to the Argentine for formal assent, which is not likely to be refused. Commonwealth circles are delighted with the result of the negotiations and consider the agreement establishes the principle most useful for future negotiations regarding other commodities. Australian exports or beef have increased rapidly during the past four years. [ At the date of the Ottawa agreements the quantity of beef and veal shipped from the Commonwealth was at about 63,000 tons a year. By 1934 the total had risen to 88,000 tons, from which there has been a slight decline in the latest year. These | figures compare with New Zaland exports of 26,500 tons of beef and veal in 1932 and 45,000 tons in 1934, from which also there was a decrease in 1935, final figures not yet beirrg available. In Australia's case j 91 per cent of all the beef shipped, according to the latest analyses, has been sent to Britain.
